WHO CAN BE A DONOR?
Living or deceased donors are both acceptable sources of the donor uterus for transplant. Generally, living donor organ transplantation (of any organ) is preferred because the procedure is entirely elective (giving enough time for a thorough and proper medical and surgical evaluation of both donor and recipient) and the amount of time the donor uterus is without its blood supply (“ischemic time”) is very small, leading to better outcomes compared to deceased donor organ transplants.
That many deceased donor uterine transplants versus living donor transplants occur in the future will depend on the real demand for uterus transplantation and regional infrastructure disparities. Living donor uterus transplants are probably going to be more common because there isn’t much of a demand.
