WHAT IS GENETIC TESTING OF EMBRYOS?

                   The genetic testing of embryos may be an important step to discuss with doctor. Genetic testing, also known as preimplantation genetic testing, allows screening embryos for genetic disorders before transferring them to the uterus during in vitro fertilization (IVF). This helps ensure only healthy embryos are selected for transfer, which can increase chances of a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby. While the testing does add additional cost and time to the IVF process, the information gained about each embryo’s genetic makeup may provide invaluable peace of mind and help avoid difficult decisions later in the pregnancy or after birth.

                   Genetic testing of embryos, known as preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), is done through in vitro fertilization (IVF). After an egg is fertilized with sperm in a lab to form an embryo, one or more cells are removed from the embryo. The DNA from these cells is analyzed to detect genetic issues.

                 The embryo continues dividing and is transferred to the uterus. However, if the testing finds an abnormality, the embryo is not used. Only unaffected embryos are transferred. This helps ensure only healthy embryos result in pregnancy.
