What is assisted hatching?

In IVF procedures, assisted hatching is a fertility therapy that speeds up the embryo hatching and implantation process. The zona pellucida is the name of the shell that protects a fertilized embryo. The egg needs to hatch, emerge from the zona pellucida, and adhere to the uterine lining in order for pregnancy to be successful.  The probability that the embryo will hatch and successfully implant is increased by a punctured zona pellucida.

                                When an embryo in a natural pregnancy reaches the blastocyst stage of development, the zona starts to thin. The blastocyst repeatedly contracts and expands, changing the flexibility of the zona, which promotes the thinning process. The zona tears when it has been sufficiently thinned, allowing the embryo to hatch. Failure to hatch an embryo prevents it from implanting.
