What Are Ovulation Disorders?

Ovulation disorders are a group of disorders that cause ovulation to fail or occur irregularly. They are one of the leading causes of infertility in women.
Ovulation disorders are caused by problems with the regulation of reproductive hormones. They can include:
  • Anovulation
  • Oligo-ovulation
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Class IV disorders, which involve high levels of prolactin or low thyroid hormone levels
The most common sign of an ovulation disorder is irregular or missed periods. Other signs include:
  • Mood changes, such as unexplained anxiety and depression
  • Sudden weight changes
The most common ovulation disorder is PCOS, which causes a hormone imbalance that affects ovulation.
