TESTOSTERONE AND INFERTILITY

As a maximum sperm generation, a delicate hormonal balance is required, with testosterone playing a key role. Low testosterone levels can lower sperm counts, which can impact fertility. Exogenous testosterone administered through medication can have a negative impact on fertility, which may seem contradictory. When the body detects too much testosterone, the testes are shut down, which results in decreased or nonexistent sperm production.

Testosterone can affect fertility in both men and women. In men, testosterone can decrease sperm count and production, which can make it harder to get pregnant. Testosterone can also affect the development of sperm.
In women, too much or too little testosterone can interfere with fertility. Testosterone helps to promote the development of follicles, which hold and release eggs during ovulation.
Testosterone can also negatively affect fertility by:
  • Inhibiting the production of follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone
  • Affecting the hypothalamic-pituitary gonadal axis
It’s possible to get pregnant while taking testosterone, but it’s not recommended. Taking testosterone during pregnancy may affect the baby’s development.
