How does the assisted hatching procedure work?

Assisted hatching is a procedure that helps embryos implant in the uterus. It involves thinning or opening the zona pellucida, the protective layer surrounding the embryo. This allows the embryo to hatch from its shell and attach to the lining of the uterus.

Some techniques used for assisted hatching include:
  • Zona thinning
  • Zona drilling
  • Complete removal of the zona
  • Use of chemicals
  • Other mechanical techniques
  • Use of lasers
One method involves using an acid solution to melt a small hole in the shell. Another method uses a computer-assisted laser to make a tiny opening.
Some indications for assisted hatching include:
  • Advanced maternal age
  • Elevated Day 3 follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
  • Thick and/or abnormal egg shell
