DIAGNOSING UTERINE CONDITIONS WITH D&C

                           In some cases, a D&C is performed to diagnose a uterine condition. Prior to the procedure, an endometrial biopsy or endometrial sampling might be recommended. This is particularly necessary if a patient experiences unusual uterine bleeding, bleeding after menopause, or if unusual endometrial cells are discovered during a routine test for cervical cancer. The collected tissue sample is sent to a lab for testing, which can help diagnose conditions such as endometrial intraepithelial hyperplasia, uterine polyps, or uterine cancer. If further information is needed, a D&C may be recommended.

TREATING UTERINE CONDITIONS WITH D&C

                 D&C can also be used as a treatment for certain uterine conditions. In cases where tissues remain in the uterus after a miscarriage or abortion, a D&C can prevent infection or heavy bleeding by clearing out these tissues. It can also be performed to remove a tumor that forms instead of a typical pregnancy, known as a molar pregnancy. Additionally, D&C is used to treat excessive bleeding after delivery by removing any remaining placenta in the uterus. Cervical or uterine polyps, which are usually noncancerous, can also be removed with a D&C. In some instances, a hysteroscopy, which provides a view of the inside of the uterus using a thin, lighted instrument, may be combined with a D&C for a more comprehensive evaluation and treatment.
