It is commonly used to diagnose and treat various uterine conditions, such as heavy bleeding, or to clear the uterine lining after a miscarriage or abortion. During a D&C, the healthcare provider dilates the cervix and then uses a surgical instrument called a curette to remove the uterine tissue.
